Check whether a gift box really folds flat
Distinguish a visual style from a confirmed collapsible structure before discussing freight.
Editorial draft · 17 September 2026
Ask for two views: the supplied flat state and the assembled box. A magnetic lid or the words “gift box” alone do not establish a collapsible construction.
Identify the construction
Separate folding paperboard cartons from rigid collapsible boxes and fixed rigid boxes. Ask which panels fold, how the sides lock and whether adhesive is applied by the supplier or during your own packing process.
Check the assembly task
Request assembly instructions and test them with a physical sample. Note whether a person needs tools, glue, peeling strips or extra parts. Confirm if the box can be reopened or flattened again; some constructions are intended for one-time assembly.
Ask for the actual shipping pack
Request units per shipping carton, carton external dimensions, gross weight and any protective wrapping. Flat delivery may reduce space, but freight savings cannot be calculated from a render or assumed across suppliers and routes.
Test the gift inside
Place the intended product and insert into the formed box. Check base support, sidewall stiffness and closure clearance. For glass candle jars, presentation packaging and parcel protection are separate questions that need to be considered together.
