Fixed gift sets and build-to-order gifts commit stock at different stages. Prebuilt sets hold products and packaging in named finished combinations; component-based assembly preserves later choices but needs feasible packing capacity. Compare both against the same actual product demand and approved configurations.

Define what the customer can select

A fixed assortment and a customer-selected combination may have different commercial identities. The gift-set identity guide keeps that barcode decision separate. This article does not assign identifiers or determine applicable GS1 rules.

Physical feasibility also remains an input. A component pool doesn’t make every selected combination fit the same box. Retain approved product, insert and card relationships.

Stock commitment can limit another use

Assume a fictional business has 100 products A and 100 products B. Route one prebuilds 100 gifts, each containing one A and one B. Route two keeps the products and suitable packaging components separate until an accepted order.

Later assumed demand Prebuilt A+B route Component-stock route
150 A-only gifts and 50 B-only gifts Existing gifts need authorised disassembly or another route Can supply at most 100 A-only and 50 B-only gifts, subject to fit and labor
80 A+B fixed gifts 80 prebuilt gifts available if current and uncommitted Materials can support 80, but assembly still needs time

Component stock doesn’t create the missing fifty A products in the first row. Its flexibility concerns how existing stock is committed, not unlimited fulfilment.

Keep finished and loose counts separate

If components inside prebuilt gifts are still included in a loose-stock report, don’t add both counts as available. Identify the physical boundary and any commitments already attached to each state.

Disassembly also needs an actual permitted route. A sealed gift can require replacement materials or another review before its contents return to use. Don’t assume every finished set can be reversed without consequence.

For build-to-order gifts, include selection, retrieval, appropriate assembly and message work after the order. A flexible catalog can create more configurations and exceptions than the existing bench can handle.

Choose a stock architecture for supported demand

Compare named order mixes, product counts and complete packaging requirements. Keep prebuild quantities, remaining component stock and later assembly time visible. The useful decision states which accepted offers each architecture can fulfil and what work remains, rather than presenting all gift combinations as interchangeable inventory.

Reconcile a partially prebuilt stock position

A new hypothetical alternative prebuilds twenty A+B gifts from the same initial 100 A and 100 B products. It leaves eighty loose A and eighty loose B. This is a third stock architecture, not another count to add to the two original alternatives.

Scenario scope Exact object or route Hypothetical input or output Calculation or record boundary
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 20 gifts New alternative: 20 A+B gifts reserve 20 A and 20 B
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 80 A products 100 A-20 A in sets
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 80 B products 100 B-20 B in sets
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 80 A-only gifts Without disassembly loose A fills 80 of 150
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 70 A products 150-80
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 50 B-only gifts 50 of 80 loose B used
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 30 B products 80-50
A only b only branch PARTIAL18 20 gifts A+B gifts untouched in A-only/B-only demand branch

For the separate demand of 150 A-only gifts and fifty B-only gifts, the partial route can supply eighty A-only and fifty B-only without opening a sealed set. The A shortage is seventy; thirty loose B and twenty sealed A+B gifts remain. All quantities assume appropriate packaging and feasible work, not confirmed fulfillment.

Releasing the twenty gifts for disassembly would create a new authorized transition, not an automatic twenty additional loose A and B. Keep its replacement materials, review and evidence separate. Likewise, an eighty-set order is an alternative demand scenario and must not consume the same pool concurrently.

Download the prebuilt versus build to order gifts record (.csv). It covers the original scenarios and this added comparison. HYPOTHETICAL rows are invented planning examples. Actual quantity, value, configuration, method, owner, observation, condition, decision, evidence and dates are blank because no actual project record has been obtained. Copy a relevant row and replace its type with ACTUAL only when entering permitted project evidence; keep the example and actual record separate. ACTUAL_BLANK is an empty starting row. A blank is unknown, never approval.

The related Gift-Set Barcode Identity Follows the Sold Assortment guide concerns a separate requirement. Use this record for the specific comparison above rather than treating that guide as evidence of a completed result.

What this changes in a packaging enquiry

Use the fixed-set versus build-to-order decision to separate common packaging purchases from variant-specific inserts, sleeves and cards. Ask suppliers for those component quantities and delivery states separately. Shared components remain available for another configuration only when that combination is physically accepted and has not already been committed. A relevant configuration to compare is the Jewelry box with fitted insert; it is a concept reference, not confirmed suitability.
